ARGENTINA

Big Buck Outfitters, Inc. has been helping a ranch in Argentina develop a hunting program. The ranch is 200,000 acres of generally open, yet very scenic country cut by over 60 miles of trout river and many, many more miles of lesser tributaries, canyons and swampy valleys. The deer are well-dispersed throughout the range with small herds of five to thirty animals here, there and seemingly everywhere.

The question, “How many deer/stags will I see on a trip?” begs the response, “How many do you want to see?” A client can expect to see well over a thousand deer, and probably closer to a couple of thousand, in five days of hunting. Hunting red deer on this ranch is comparable to hunting deer or elk in Wyoming or Montana – except you should see more game than on any Western hunt.

The ranch offers two stag packages – a trophy hunt and a management hunt. The trophy hunt includes one mature stag of good quality, one good management stag, and two guides’ choice cull stags, and the management hunt includes the harvest of one good management stag and three guides’ choice cull stags. All stags must be fully mature to harvest – clients are not shooting young stags with small antlers; these are good old stags with less points than maximally desirable.

Meals include lots of Argentine beef and some fine red deer venison for local flavor. Wine is served with lunch and dinner, with beer and liquor provided after each day’s hunt. Lodging is very comfortable with an attached bathroom for all bedrooms and a nice lounge area with fireplace, bar and sofas. The hunts are guided one-on-one with in-field transportation generally by compact crew cab pickups common in Argentina.

2002 and 2003 saw a 100 percent harvest rate on the free-range trophy stags and the average stag scored 270-280 SCI. The biggest were 350 and 340 respectively, and all of the trophies had lots of points with seventeen being the most.

The trip requires a transfer from the main airport in Buenos Aires to one across town that flies clients to San Martin. A representative of the ranch meets clients in Buenos Aires to assist with the gun permit process at each airport and to drive clients across town. The ranch assumes this cost.

The ranch provides airport pickup at San Martin de los Andes, or a client may fly to Bariloche, rent a car and drive through two hours of spectacular country on the way to the ranch.

Non-hunting companions are welcome at the ranch for the daily rate of $195.00. San Martin and Bariloche are tourist areas with lots of shops and cafes. If a non-hunter wants to spend time in town, a vehicle rental is advisable.
